Michael Raftery

Mike Raftery is a member of the Board of Directors of Explore Mars, Inc. As one of the leaders during the development of the International Space Station (ISS), Raftery brings experience in the type of large scale system integration and International cooperation that will be necessary for a human mission to Mars.
Raftery is President of TerraTrace Corporation which is a Texas-based business dedicated to planetary science and education. Prior to this, Raftery spent 33 years as part of the Boeing Company where he worked in a series of assignments contributing to human spaceflight.

Raftery graduated from Seattle University with bachelors degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering. In Seattle, he worked on the 757/767 program as well as several key space transportation efforts such as the Inertial Upper Stage and the Sea Launch programs.

In 1995, Raftery moved with his family to Houston, TX to become part of the newly re-organized space station program. Initially, Raftery led the design and build of the ISS systems integration lab which is the ground-based facility in Houston used to test the flight software and onboard systems. In 1999, Raftery was given responsibility the teams building the onboard electronics systems which included the data processors, guidance, navigation, and communications equipment. From 2001 to 2006, Raftery led Boeing’s ISS Vehicle organization which was responsible for the final assembly, integration, pre & post launch testing, as well as mission operations support to NASA. The Vehicle organization responsibilities include primary structures, electrical power, thermal control, life support, and all mechanical systems for the US segment of the ISS. The Vehicle organization worked extensively with the International Partner teams to ensure a seamless integration and responsive flight operations for the orbiting laboratory.

In 2006, Raftery was appointed Deputy Program Manager for ISS where he served till 2012. From 2012 until his retirement from Boeing in 2014, Raftery was the executive leader for Boeing’s Space Exploration Division strategic planning which included human missions to Mars and how to prepare for them.
Raftery is an Associate Fellow with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a long time advocate for Mars Exploration.
